Choosing a bamboo hair brush

A bamboo hair brush is an easy way to cut down on plastic in your bathroom without giving up anything you need from a brush. Bamboo is light but naturally hard-wearing, and the warm finish looks nicer on a dressing table than most plastic brushes. The main thing is choosing a style that suits your hair.

What to look for

• Bristle type: Bamboo pins with rounded tips are good for detangling and give a pleasant scalp massage, while boar or mixed bristles are often chosen for smoothing and adding shine.
• Brush shape: Paddle brushes cover more hair at once and suit longer or thicker hair, whereas oval or cushion brushes are good all-rounders.
• Hair type: Widely spaced pins tend to work better on thick or curly hair, while closer bristles suit finer, straighter hair.
• Pin tips: Check that the pin ends are smooth and rounded, as rough tips can snag hair or scratch the scalp.
• Handle comfort: A smooth, well-shaped handle makes a real difference if you have long hair and spend a while brushing.

Looking after it

Pull loose hair out of the brush regularly. Every week or two, wipe the pins and handle with a damp cloth and a drop of mild shampoo, then leave the brush to dry with the bristles facing down. Avoid soaking it or leaving it in a steamy shower, as too much water can loosen the cushion and damage the bamboo.
